Bioinvasion Day

ELATHAND initiated the observance of Bioinvasion Day on 10 July, commemorating the publication anniversary of Charles S. Elton's The Ecology of Invasions by Animals and Plants, released on 10 July 1958. That book laid the ecological foundation for understanding how introduced species establish, spread and affect native ecosystems.

The day recognises the origins of invasion biology while encouraging scientists, conservationists, students, policymakers, institutions and communities to work together on preventing, monitoring and managing invasive alien species.

It promotes scientific literacy, public engagement, ecological restoration, early detection and the conservation of native biodiversity. Preventing biological invasions is far more effective than attempting to reverse their impacts once ecosystems have been degraded.

Bioinvasion Day is more than a commemoration. It is a call to action — advancing research, fostering collaboration, empowering communities and inspiring responsible environmental stewardship.
